Annie Leibovitz: The world's most famous living portrait photographer? Rolling Stone Magazine; Vogue; Nelson Mandela; John Lennon
John Lennon: The Beatles; Yoko Ono; Love ins; Strawberry Fields Forever. Murdered in Manhattan.
In 1980 Annie Leibovitz had a morning shoot set up with John Lennon. Ideally, she wanted just Lennon for a Rolling Stone cover. Lennon wanted Yoko Ono in every shot. Many think he looked gaunt, unwell, old. But when Leibovitz had him strip naked and curl up in a fetus-hug with Ono, he enthused "you've captured our relationship exactly. Promise me it will be on the cover." 5 hours later he was dead; murdered outside the Upper West Side's Dakota Apartments in which he lived.
Ono still lives in The Dakota (built 1880-84), one of the City's most successful (think expensive and exclusive) cooperatives. Find it on Central Park West, Grid Reference M2 on our Midtown concierge map.
Annie Leibovitz, still going strong, is rumored to be trying to sell her three-house West Village compound (over 10,000 square feet!) Grid Reference F2 on our Midtown concierge map. Clive Burrow
